Grand Valley State School Athletic Year in Review: GVSU’s Top 12 Athletes


Hannah Beatus, softball

The redshirted junior received honors for GLIAC Pitcher of the Year, All-GLIAC First Team, and GLIAC All-Academic Team. She ranked fifth in the nation with a 0.97 ERA and eighth in hits allowed per seven innings at 3.85. She recorded 11 shutouts and four no-hitters, including a perfect game that tied her for sixth most career no-hitters in program history.

The junior was awarded Offensive Player of the Year and first-team member. She was United Soccer Coach’s second-team All-American, D2CCA first-team All-American, and unanimous first-team All-Region selection. Leading the Lakers with 20 goals and 46 points, she recorded eight game-winning goals.

Charles DeLong

Charles DeLong, golfer

The freshman had one of the best seasons in GVSU program history. He was named GLIAC Player of the Year and All-GLIAC First Team. He had eight top-five finishes, including three tournament wins during the regular season. He placed seventh at the DII Championships. He also earned NCAA DII PING All-American and All-Region honors and was named to the CoSIDA All-District Academic Team, and was an NCAA DII Midwest/Central Region Medalist.

Ellie Droste, basketball

The freshman was named to the All-GLIAC First Team and named NCAA Midwest Regional Tournament MVP in the Regional Tournament after scoring 54 points in three tournament games. She was GVSU’s second-leading scorer with 12.2 points per game, 44.4 percent from the field, and 39.4 percent on three.

The junior won the USTFCCCA first-team All-American in the shot put (indoor) and hammer throw (outdoor) event. She finished first at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a distance of 62.62m in the hammer throw and a first place finish at the GLIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a distance of 58 .41 m in the hammer throw. After winning the outdoor hammer throw, she threw even further in the GVSU weekend extra meet and broke the school record with a distance of 64.21m. Along with all the gear she earned during the season, she also earned GLIAC All-Academic honors.

Lydia Goble of GVSU

Lydia Goble, softball

The junior was the third Laker in program history to receive NFCA and D2CCA All-America First Team honors in the same season. She was also a second-team CoSIDA Academic All-American, consensus first-team all-region, and first-team All-GLIAC shortstop. Batting .465 for the season, he scored the second-highest single-season batting average in program history. She led a team-high 52 runs, scored 50 times, hit six home runs, 17 doubles and three triples for a team-best 120 goals, and was also a perfect 12-for-12. in stolen bases.

Spencer Nelson

Spencer Nelson, baseball

The junior hit .325, including 67 hits, 49 runs scored and 35 RBIs. Led the team with six triples and was second on the team with 17 doubles and eight homers. He had a .583 hitting percentage and .386 on-base percentage for an OPS of .969, which was second-best on the team. Due to his outstanding efforts, he earned NCBWA Midwest All-Around Second-Team honors and was named to the All-GLIAC Second-Team. Nelson was named the 2022 American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings Gold Glove winner.

Emma Richard

Emma Richards, Athletics

The junior finished first in the discus throw at the GLIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a distance of 50.25m and finished seventh in the discus throw at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a distance of 47.43 m. She was awarded the USTFCCCA First-Team All-American in Discus (Outdoor) and earned GLIAC Academic Excellence Honors.

Gracyn Segard, swimming and diving

The junior was the national champion in the 1-meter dive with a final score of 448.3 and the 3-meter dive All-American with a final score of 487.15. She also received the CSCCA Scholar All-American Honors.

The senior was a first-team All-GLIAC and also received United Soccer Coaches Academic All-American and All-Regions selection. Steinwasher was the GLIAC Defensive Player of the Year for the third straight year and helped the Lakers win their 14th consecutive GLIAC Tournament title.

Ali Thompson

Ali Thompson, volleyball

The senior finished her season having received four All GLIAC selections and was nominated for the 2022 NCAA Women of the Year. She finished with a team record 304 kills and with a .215 offense percentage. She also averaged 3.17 kills per set and had 36 aces, 318 digs and 36 blocks. She became a member of the 1,000 digs club after finishing her career with 1,228 digs and finishing with 975 eliminations.

Jake Van Tubbergen, Basketball

The eldest ranked high in the standings as he was named Pre-Season Player of the Year and was selected to the All-GLIAC First Team. From the 19 games, he averaged 27.6 minutes, 13.6 points, and 8.0 rebounds with a .474 shooting percentage and .810 free throw percentage. Van Tubbergen recorded outstanding season highs of 32 points, 17 rebounds and four double-doubles. The senior star led the Lakers to a second-place finish in the conference and a quarterfinal appearance in the GLIAC Tournament.
