Magazine “When the lampposts come on”

Some of you may remember the late Quibi streaming app. It promised abbreviated scripted and unscripted content right on your phone. The shows’ episodes were 10 minutes or less. The streaming service was for those who feel like we don’t have time to get sucked into a new TV show. However, that didn’t work and Quibi flopped. Fortunately, the Roku channel has taken over some of its old shows like When the street lights come on.

What is the premise of “When the street lights come on?” “

The series stars Chosen Jacobs (It: Chapter 2) Sophie Thatcher, Ben Ahlers, Mark Duplass, Queen Latifah and many more as residents of a small Midwestern town in the ’90s. When the most popular schoolgirl Chrissy Monroe (Kristine Froseth) is rudely found murdered next to her English teacher, Mr. Carpenter (Duplass), shock waves swept through the city. The two were having an affair, and it feels like something bigger is at stake here.

Charlie Chamber (Jacobs) is Chrissy’s neighbor and is somewhat close to her younger sister, Becky (Thatcher). Becky and Chrissy were at odds in their teens. Becky is the black sheep of the affluent Monroe family. Queen Latifah (Equalizer), as Detective Grasso, struggles to identify a suspect as more and more people emerge as potential murderers.

Chosen Jacobs and Sophie Thatcher shine in their roles

According to the Roku Channel Summary, “When the street lights come on, tells the story of a double homicide in a small Midwestern suburb that turns the lives of a group of teenagers upside down and sends investigators to search for answers in the fall of 1995. ” However, it seems the series is more about mourning and the fact that no one is promised tomorrow.

Jacobs and Thatcher are phenomenal in their roles as Charlie and Becky. They nail down the awkwardness of those teenage years. Being a teenager is hard enough. Add to that the discovery of two corpses above all else, and the emotions would be almost impossible for anyone to handle. Duplass tends to go for the scariest roles. (See his performance in Crawl to really understand what we’re talking about.) His small role as a teacher having an illicit relationship with a student doesn’t stray too far from the roles he played before. He’s good at this type of character, however.

“When the Streetlights Go On” would be better as a feature film

As we mentioned earlier, we understand the idea behind Quibi and his bite-sized drama. However, it doesn’t serve the content particularly well when you have a script and actors pushing it out of the park. When the street lights come on, written by Eddie O’Keefe and Chris Hutton, is a blacklist script that was eventually created. We are delighted he did. But more than anything else, we wish there was more time to get to know the people of Colfax, Illinois.

Horror series, which are advertised by The Roku Channel, are a rare breed. Audiences don’t always need a detailed character story. In this case, however, viewers would be better served if it was a feature film or even a series with 60 minute episodes.

Independently, When the street lights come on worth a watch and a show that we think people will talk about. The first episode premiered on October 8, 2021, with a new episode every week on The Roku Channel.
