Packers 2022 post-draft position review: Edge rushers

0

Pass rush is the key to a successful defense. The Green Bay Packers are placed in the starting positions, but do they have enough depth?

Should the Packers add another pass thrower like they did at inside linebacker in 2021 by signing De’Vondre Campbell?

Let’s look at the moves the Packers have made so far this offseason, and if more work is needed.

Currently on the list

Rashan Gary, Preston Smith, Kingsley Enagbare, Tipa Galeai, Jonathan Garvin, Randy Ramsey, La’Darius Hamilton, Chauncey Manac, Kobe Jones

Off-season moves

The Packers moved from Pro Bowl edge rusher Za’Darius Smith before the start of the league’s new year to create cap space. Smith signed with the Minnesota Vikings.

Green Bay granted Preston Smith a contract extension, which also allowed the team to lower its milestone reached in 2022.

Needing some passing depth, the Packers drafted Kingsley Enagbare in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft last month.

Improved from 2021?

Yes, only because Za’Darius Smith barely played.

If Smith is healthy and back to his best this year, the Packers will miss him. But that question is whether the Packers have improved since 2021. And considering Smith has only played two games, the answer is yes.

Part of that will be the continued development of Rashan Gary, a rising star in the Green Bay defense, as well as the arrival of Kingsley Enagbare and the return of Randy Ramsey from injury.

key player

Rashan Gary.

Gary played at the Pro Bowl level in 2021, making three sacks and seven quarterback hits in the final three games of the regular season.

He then had two sacks and three quarterback hits in the playoff game against the San Francisco 49ers.

It wouldn’t be surprising if Gary hosts a 2022 All-Pro season.

Job prospects

It’s possible that Green Bay’s passing rush will get a lot better in 2022.

Defensive Line Additions Both Jarran Reed and Devonte Wyatt can help add an inside pass rush to the defense.

Fifth-round pick Kingsley Enagbare should also make an impact as a backup pass thrower in his first season.

Depth at the rusher’s edge is still a slight concern, so the Packers should consider signing a veteran. A talented and experienced player who can play a substitute role and can put up important plays in big games.
