Villanova leads three-game winning streak in the East, Drexel plays for CAA draw

The Wild Cats of Villanova are on a three-game winning streak in Big East. Villanova won a 1 – 0 match at Xavier. Akinjide Awujo scored his first goal at 14:32, and that goal held up for the remainder of the game. Goalkeeper Carson Williams completed his third shutout of the season. The The falcons of St. Joseph shared their two games this week. The Hawks lost a non-conference game 2-1 to Hofstra. Heading out on the road for an Atlantic 10 game, Saint Joe’s won 2-1 over George Washington. The Hawks scored a SC Top 10-worthy goal on a bike kick from Chris Hunt, his first. James Fletcher scored in both games, earning him a team-high in goals (4) and points. The Drexel Dragons drew while playing a scoreless draw against Elon. It was a physical game that saw 4 shots on goal. Three were near the Phoenix. The Explorers of La Salle fell 2 – 1 in second overtime against VCU. The Rams scored 5:38 in the game. The Explorers tied with a goal from Junior Nare nearly nine minutes later. Damian Gallegos finished the match in 109e minute. The Quakers of the University of Pennsylvania opened his Ivy League schedule falling to Cornell 3 – 0 at home. Harry Fuller gave the Big Red a lead on a penalty at 2:46 of the game. Goalkeeper Dane Jacomen made 4 saves. The Temple Owls lost both conference games during the week, getting a shutout in every game. Memphis took a 2-0 win, then in 12th SMU Cherry and White fell 1-0. The Tigers scored both goals in the opening 20 minutes of the game. The Mustangs got their score in the 67e minute. Temple goalkeeper Liam Cummings made 5 saves.

Villanova takes the road to Connecticut. Penn continues to play in the Ivy League on his way to Columbia. Drexel has a match at UMass, Lowell. Coming to town will be Davidson who visits La Salle. Saint-Joseph welcomes Saint-Louis. Temple has a non-conference game with Princeton on North Broad Street.

Results – Tied 0 – 0 (2 OT) against Elon

Summary – Goalkeeper Cameron Saunders made three saves in the second half against Elon. It was the third blank slate of the season for Saunders.

Next game – October 9 at UMass, Lowell

LA SALLE 3 – 7 – 0 Global, 0 – 3 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Lost 2 – 1 (2 OT) against VCU

Summary – Goalkeeper Carlos More saved 4 shots. The Explorers faced a 12 – 9 deficit on shots, 6 – 3 on goal. La Salle is looking for his first league victory.

Next game – October 9 vs. Davidson at McCarthy Stadium

PENN – 4 – 3 – 1 overall, 0 – 1 – 0 Ivy League

Results – Lost 3- 0 against Cornell

Summary – Les Rouge et Bleu only got 2 shots on goal against 7 by the Grand Rouge. Ben Stitz and Matt Leigh had the shots for Penn that needed a save. Overall, Cornell had a 12-4 advantage in shots.

Next game – October 9 at Columbia

SAINT JOSEPH 4 – 7 – 0 Overall, 2 – 1 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Lost 2 – 1 to Hofstra, won 2 – 0 to George Washington

Summary – The Hawks and Pride waited for a 2 hour delay. Hofstra scored at 1:12 in the second half for the victory margin. Luis Ludson did a shutout in DC. The Hawks had an 8-0 advantage in shots on goal.

Next game – October 6 vs. Saint Louis at Sweeney Field

TEMPLE 1 – 5 – 2 Overall, 0 – 4 – 0 AAC

Results – Lost 2 – 0 against Memphis, Lost 1 – 0 at # 12 SMU

Summary – The Owls were dominated by a composite 32-12 and 13-4 on goal. Temple is on a five-game losing streak. The Owls are looking for their first American-style victory.

Next game – October 6 vs. Princeton at Temple Soccer Complex

VILLANOVA 7 – 2 – 0 Overall, 3 – 0 – 0 Grand Est

Results – Won 1 – 0 to Xavier

Summary – Williams saved two from Xavier. The Wildcats were outnumbered by the Musketeers 8-4. Both teams netted 2.
