Record 20 Vanderbilt students and alumni named Fulbright Scholars

The U.S. Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board announced the Fulbright U.S. Student Program Awards for 2022-23, with a record 20 Vanderbilt University students and alumni earning the prestigious awards . In addition to the 20 new Fulbright Scholars, four Vanderbilt seniors were selected as alternates, and 32 students and alumni were recognized as semi-finalists.

“Vanderbilt empowers its students to think big, embrace different perspectives, and take the intellectual risks often necessary to find scalable solutions to pressing global issues,” said Vice President and Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs C. Cybele Raver. “This year’s record-breaking recognition from the Fulbright program is a testament to the high-caliber academic preparation and innovation of our students as the next generation of emerging leaders.”

The Fulbright Program is the U.S. government’s flagship international educational exchange program, providing scholarships for students to conduct research, earn graduate degrees, and teach English in more than 150 countries abroad. The Fulbright Program is funded by an annual appropriation from the United States Congress to the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the United States Department of State. About 2,000 Fulbright scholars were selected from a pool of nearly 10,000 applicants.

Prior to this year, the most Fulbright Scholars selected from Vanderbilt in a year was 13. The 2022 Vanderbilt Fulbright Scholars join 198 former Vanderbilt Fulbright Scholars since the program’s inception in 1946. Fulbright alumni join a network of thousands of esteemed scholars, many of whom are leaders in their fields, gain non-competitive hiring eligibility for federal positions and are part of a global community of State Department alumni. Fulbright alumni include leaders who are making a difference in their communities and in the world, including 61 Nobel Prize winners, 89 Pulitzer Prize winners and 40 who have served as heads of state or government.
